Charming Collioure France: Banyuls Wines & La Balette Restaurant

June 2012 - We have rented an apartment for a week in the seaside town of Collioure in the far southwestern region of France only 20 kilometers from the Spanish border. I visited here once before 15 years ago and fell in love with the charming little village with its calm bay surrounded by church, tower, chateau and stone seawalls. It has narrow streets with houses and stores painted in pastel colors and flowers are everywhere. It is the place where many famous painters came to paint including Matisse, Picasso, and Derain. In addition to sunbathing on the pebbly beaches [...]

Loire Valley: Chateau Cheverny & Romorantin Wine

We are spending a week in a French gite an hour south of Paris in the tiny village of Thourey-Ferroutes near Fountainbleu. The gite is quite spacious with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, full kitchen and living room. It is within the grounds of a large chateau, and the owner Sylvie, is very gracious and speaks perfect English. We are relaxing in the area and also taking day trips. So far we have visited Chartres, Monet’s garden in Giverny (stayed there the first night at a B&B), and took the train to Paris (leaves every 30 minutes from the delightful town [...]

Why Millennials Don’t Read Emails

Last night we had our annual SSU Wine Club Board planning meeting at my house.  This is usually a relaxed event where we identify the wineries we want to invite to campus next semester, and enjoy a BBQ dinner with many fun wines.  This year’s planning dinner was equally enjoyable, but I was struck by our conversation about how we will promote our educational tasting seminars. “We will market the seminars via word of mouth and Facebook, of course,” said our new VP of Marketing.  “Most college students never read emails.” As a college professor, I already knew this, but [...]

By Guest Author Jenna Riggan - The SSU Wine Sense club was fortunate enough to have five awesome wineries pour for us at the most recent Food & Wine Pairing! 50 students tasted wines from Silver Oak, Twomey Cellars, Corkscrew, Azari Vineyard and Dutcher Crossing. Our chefs prepared delicious food as usual, including tri-tip, asparagus and raspberry brownies.   Favorite Wines   The first favorite wine of the evening was a 2009 Dutcher Crossing Stuhlmuller Vineyard Alexander Valley Chardonnay.  ($34.00)  This wine was an instant favorite with its floral aromas, and lemon, vanilla and crème brulée flavors. Dutcher Crossing Winery is [...]

What are Favorite Argentina Wines of SSU Millennials?

By guest author, Jenna Riggan - SSU Wine Sense goes to Argentina! We kick-started spring break with a special presentation of five Argentinean wines. SSU students enjoyed exploring new and different wine styles, accompanied by an internationally inspired menu. Our two chefs grilled two large pork loins, served with chimichurri sauce, multi colored potato salad, and dulce de leche crepes. Favorite Wines  The first favorite wine of the evening won by a landslide. This 2011 Crios de Susana Balbo Rose of Malbec ($11.99) from the Mendoza region of Argentina wowed tasters with its bright red color, and just a touch of [...]

B.R. Cohn and Shone Farm Shine With Millennials

By Guest Author Jenna Riggan - SSU Wine Sense welcomed Shone Farm and B.R. Cohn for the latest Food & Wine Pairing event. A total of 36 students enjoyed learning about both wineries, and a few attentive tasters walked away with a bottle of B.R. Cohn Estate Grown Olive Oil, and a bottle of B.R. Cohn California Golden Balsamic Vinegar thanks to a raffle hosted by B.R. Cohn’s Stephen Winston! Favorite Wines Shone Farm Winery, located in the heart of the Russian River Valley AVA, is where the Santa Rosa Junior College wine students have the opportunity to be involved [...]

Blind Wine Tasting Battle with SSU Students and Quivera Winery

By Guest Author: Jenna Riggan - The latest SSU Wine Sense club meeting was full of conversation and member participation. Quivira Vineyards and Winery shared three of their lovely biodynamic wines with 23 students, who were both intrigued and impressed with the elements involved in biodynamic winemaking. Our chefs prepared a hearty meal of Lamb Shepherd's Pie, a mixed green salad with fig vinaigrette, and an insanely delicious rum cake to be paired with the Quivira wines. For a fun twist, SSU Wine Sense officers also organized a blind tasting competition, where SSU Wine Sense members (and Quivira guest Nicholas [...]

An Intimate Tasting with Schweiger and Bouchaine Estate Wineries

The most recent tasting of the SSU WineSense Club was intimate and relaxed.  Schweiger and Bouchaine wineries both presented and poured six of their beautiful estate wines.  The group of 18 Millennials in attendance really opened up and felt more comfortable asking questions in the more intimate setting. Favorite Wines of the Evening The favorite wine of the evening from Schweiger Vineyards  was the 2007 Schweiger Vineyards  Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley, Estate Bottled ($58).  This was a rich, full-bodied Cabernet with dark berries, chocolate, and toasty oak.  It has a very velvety mouth feel with a long [...]

Millennials Toast Toad Hollow Winery

The Spring semester got off to a great start when Toad Hollow Winery agreed to host the first SSU WineSense Club tasting.  A total of 46 millennials showed up that evening to learn more about the wines from this Sonoma County winery located in Healdsburg (http://www.toadhollow.com/). The students tasted and toasted to six Toad Hollow wines along with scrumptious food pairings.  The wines included:  2010 Chardonnay - Mendocino County, 2011 Rose of Pinot Noir, Sonoma County, 2009 Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley, 2006 Pinot Noir Reserve - Russian River Valley, 2007 Merlot - Russian River Valley, and NV Risque [...]

Why I Love Cabernet Sauvignon

Whenever I am asked that question: "if you were stranded on an island and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be," my answer is always the same  - a great bottle of cabernet sauvignon.  Cab is always satisfying - big, rich, tannic with complex fruit and a wonderful accompaniment to meats and strong cheeses.  A glass of Cabernet Sauvignon on a cold night near a warm fire is almost a comfort food. But I am not alone in loving cab, because it is now the number one selling red varietal in the U.S. market (Neilsen, Nov. [...]

2011 Blog Stats Report for Wine Stars – 11,000 views

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog. Here's an excerpt: The concert hall at the Syndey Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 11,000 times in 2011. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it. Port of Dubrovnik, Croatia – Plavac Mali and the Island of Peacocks and Cicadas (Lokrum)

As I drew back the curtains that morning, I’ll never forget the sight of the beautiful Croatian islands that appeared on all sides of the ship as we sailed into the port of Dubrovnik. We sat and sipped coffee on the balcony as we marveled at the beauty of the rocky islands with small fir trees – some deserted and some with houses along tiny sandy beaches. Equally impressive was the port with the large bridges as the ship sailed into the narrow inlet outside the old city walls. Dubrovnik was the main city was had come to visit on [...]

The Port of Bari, Italy – Burrata Cheese and the Famous Primativo Grape

Sept. 2011 - The ship docked in Bari two hours late because of a strike going on in the city that day. Apparently all the transportation workers were picketing so there was no way to obtain taxis, buses, etc. However, when the strike was over we were allowed to go into the city around 1pm. This is another port where you can actually walk from the ship to the old city of Bari (about ½ mile walk), but as the day was very hot, we decided to pay to take the bus. Bari is located in the Puglia region of [...]

Port of Ravenna, Italy – Mosaics and the Albana and Burson Grapes

Sept. 2011 – Our ship arrived in the port of Ravenna in the late morning. The day was overcast with a potential for slight drizzle, but the air was warm. We paid to take the bus into the town because it was too far to walk and the docks were in an ugly industrial area. However, once we were dropped off in the city center, we found the pedestrian-only downtown to be delightful. It was filled with old squares, outdoor cafes, fountains, and small streets lined with shops. Ravenna, established in the 400’s, is a UNESCO world heritage site famous [...]

Holiday Wines Millennials Love – Thanks to KJ, Mazzocco, deLorimier, Stryker and Selby Wineries

The last three SSU Wine Sense Club meetings have been packed to overflowing with an average of 50 Millennials attending each tasting. Special thanks to all of the Sonoma County wineries who have participated in these educational events. Kendall Jackson was kind enough to provide a “fermentation style seminar” with Brian Cronin, MS and Jann Cotter.  The session included tastings of 5 chardonnays crafted in different styles:  1) fermented in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, 2) fermented in stainless with malo, 3) fermented and aged in neutral oak, 4) fermented and aged in French oak, and 5) fermented and [...]
