By guest author, Jenna Riggan – SSU Wine Sense goes to Argentina! We kick-started spring break with a special presentation of five Argentinean wines. SSU students enjoyed exploring new and different wine styles, accompanied by an internationally inspired menu. Our two chefs grilled two large pork loins, served with chimichurri sauce, multi colored potato salad, and dulce de leche crepes.
Favorite Wines
The first favorite wine of the evening won by a landslide. This 2011 Crios de Susana Balbo Rose of Malbec ($11.99) from the Mendoza region of Argentina wowed tasters with its bright red color, and just a touch of sweetness to the crisp, red berry flavors. Susana Balbo is a reputed winemaker from Argentina, and was the first Argentine winemaker to be hired as a consultant for wines outside of Argentina! The second favorite wine of the evening was a 2010 Tercos Torrontés ($12) from the Salta region of the Andean North West, Argentina. This dry wine is very refreshing, with grapefruit, peach, apple, melon and pineapple flavors. For more information on Tercos, http://www.globalvineyard.com/tercos.html. Fun fact: this winery’s label was featured in an online article for the Wall Street Journal for its “kicking” label!
